It’s typically produced by crushing and burning the limestone, which is then mixed in with water to form a putty that is aged. Used since Roman times, Limewash is a kind of chalky paint made using natural materials. Painted brick walls are the top favorite among most homeowners in the US.

You can also slow down drying time by dampening the bricks before application. Just spray them down with a water hose and wait five to 10 minutes before applying the limewash. To make the exterior of your home look new and glossy, you will need at least 4 layers of limewash. Limewashing is a great way to project an ordinary paintless house too.

Update: How Is The Limewash Brick Holding Up Years Later?

Whitewash made from latex paint tends to sit on the surface of the brick more than limewash, which more easily soaks into the brick's pores. To make your own limewash, start with pure hydrated lime from a home center or nursery. This is done by adding 15- to 20-percent lime with 80- to 85-percent water. Colors tend to remain uniform from bucket to bucket, as long as the same amount of water is added. Most limewash paint still requires the user to add some water.

Brick can be beautiful and timeless, but it’s not everyone’s style in its natural state. Limewash brick gives homeowners the option to cover up unwanted colors or highlight certain features of their home without the maintenance of painting. Limewash brick is environmentally friendly, and ages beautifully over time, giving your home a look that’s uniquely yours.

Then add water, mix, add more water if needed, mix more… until you get the right mixture. I learned SO MUCH that I honestly think other people should have specified–and I REALLY think it will be helpful for you to know this stuff before you lime wash your brick. I couldn't find anyone who still owned a pressure washer, but Home Depot Tool Rental had one that was sufficient for what I needed.

First, I tried to just paint into the cracks

When you first open the Romabio limewash container, it’s kind of like a thick peanut butter consistency with a lot of water that rises to the top. Before lime washing, you need to prepare and clean your brick and your house just like you would for paint. When starting out, it’s a good idea to choose a smaller area.

This way, the dark and light contrast will create a statement and make your home look stunning. You may not be limewashing your brick to cover it up, but to highlight certain features. This beautiful ranch home had a gorgeous decorative chimney that the homeowner wanted to show off.

One of the most impressive ways Limewash Bricks become superior to paint is due to their sustainability. Limewash is made of perfectly natural elements, unlike the harmful chemicals that are often put in paints. The coats are made of nothing but clay, pigments, and minerals. The only downside I can find is that it’s not easy to paint over limewash. Or, if the coating is fairly new, you can get it removed quickly by hand scrubbing the surface.

High humidity can also slow down the drying process and cause the limewash to streak or discolor. I wasn’t wild about all of that exposed brick in the picture above, so, I went over it with more limewash. That’s the beauty of this technique, you really can’t mess it up. You can always add more or take some away (or all of it, if you absolutely don’t like it). I chose to start my limewash DIY project on a smaller wall, knowing I could wash it all off if I needed to…. Knowing I wanted a more true white, I went with the Avorio White limewash finish.

I recommend wetting it down in sections as you work your way around the house so it doesn’t dry before you get to it. I don’t know why but I was anticipating it to be MUCH more difficult to mix. It was actually very easy and could be done with a long stir stick if needed. The most commonly used comparison I found when researching this process was that your final product should be the consistency of whole milk.

Here in this article, we will walk through the basic DIY steps that are easy and fast to follow, even for beginners.

The finish can be customized to match the style and aesthetic of the home, from a subtle whitewash to a bolder, more saturated color. Limewash is also a durable finish that can withstand the elements and last for many years, making it a practical choice for homeowners. I have to admit, I was a nervous wreck taking that first swipe of paint. But this entire wall was covered in no time and I was all in. After waiting about 20 minutes, I used a hose on the “Jet” setting to wash some of the limewash off the surface of the brick…. So, at the beginning of spring 2019, I started dreaming of an exterior home makeover.

Something good to know ahead of time - the wash goes on very transparent. I only did one coat on the whole house and as you can see in the picture below, as the wash dries it gets more opaque. As you can see, I wasn’t shy about loading up my brush and just slapping it on. Below is a quick little video I shot as I was applying the wash so you can see first-hand how easy this is. And although only the front facade of our house is brick, we barely made a dent in the bag. Stone houses have made a name for themselves for centuries because of their effectiveness.

This project is not only inexpensive and easy, but it’s pretty fast! Granted, only the front of our house is brick, an entirely brick house could be limewashed in a day or two, especially if multiple people were taking part in the limewashing party. Many people think that since limewashing brick is an inexpensive method, the result will not be impressive. However, it should be noted that limewash bricks come in a variety of colors.

How to Limewash a Brick House 5 Easy DIY Steps

We also looked into German Smear (White Mortar mixes), but had a hard time finding any in our area without having to get it specially ordered. Lime wash is a mixture of lime, tint, and water and will penetrate the brick similarly to paint BUT lime is more durable and also discourages mold growth...plus it's much cheaper! All-in-all this DIY took a couple weeks (since we both work full time outside of the home) and the cost totaled just shy of $750. Are you interested in DIY “painting” your brick house but not sure of the best product to use or how to go about it? This post is sponsored by Romabio but the opinions are my own.

If desired, you can apply a second coat working to your desired opaqueness. You'll also provide a layer of breathable protection for your bricks if you limewash them. Homebuilders often design facades with mixed materials and finishes to add interest. The result may be an architectural mishmash that lacks a definitive style. Limewash is the perfect solution to creating a coherent facade, as part of an overall color scheme that ties the elements together.

THEN, I tried taking a tiny brush and applying it in the grout

There are some great resources for distressing techniques, and I’ve linked one of them here if it is the look you want to achieve. Incredibly we were able to limewash the whole house in one day. Adding in both of those steps likely would have made this a 2-3 day process with two people. It is important to avoid applying limewash in extreme temperatures, such as during very hot or very cold weather, as this can affect the drying process and the quality of the finish.

Eye-Catching Options for Your Front Door

I’d start with an EXTREMELY watery consistency, and I’d go over an area and put that mixture ONLY in the grout. Before starting, check how deep your grout lines are and how it looks with the limewash. You’ve read through the basic steps, and it’s time to talk about all the ways this project did NOT go as planned–and all the things you can learn from that.

Typical house paint is a water-based latex polymer modified with pigments. The paint goes on and as it dries it forms a continuous plastic film on the brick surface. It doesn’t allow moisture through easily so it is not as good for the brick and it’s also not good for the paint!

If you want a solid painted look for your brick home, use a breathable paint that’s especially for brick, like Romabio’s mineral-based Masonry Paint. Limewashing your home is an easy DIY project if you live in a one-story home. If you have two or more floors, we recommend contacting a pro.

Applying limewash to a brick house does more than just beautify the exterior; it serves a protective function that extends the life of the brickwork. Limewash for brick surfaces penetrates deeply into the material, ensuring the protective layer allows the brick to breathe and release moisture. This is particularly important for the longevity of brick houses, as trapped moisture can lead to deterioration over time. The limewash finish on a brick house provides a unique, matte texture that can’t be achieved with regular paint.

I’ve been screwing projects since 2018, but I wouldn’t change a DANG thing, guys. Just finding the perfect mixture one time will not be enough. If you’re not okay with messy, then a lot of DIY projects are probably not for you. I recommend doing relatively small sections, especially in the beginning as you perfect your technique.

A great feature of this home’s exterior is its cozy front porch. Brightening up the brick with limewash helps the space feel more open. Adding furniture and wood accents gives off a welcoming and approachable vibe. Contrast, when done correctly, can show off your home’s unique features and personal style. This home has beautiful black grille windows that were overshadowed by the heaviness of the brick. Classico limewash and black window trim add contrast and visual interest to the home’s best features.

Within 4-5 years, you may find chipping and flaking on the exterior of your home because regular paint just sits on top of the brick. Whitewashing your home is an easy DIY project if you live in a one-story home. Limewash is a user-friendly product that is easy to work with to achieve the exact amount of color you want.

This will allow you to work with the limewash and really get a feel for it. Limewash is a type of paint that is made from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and water. Limewash has been used for centuries as a decorative and protective building coating.

15 Common Plants That Are Toxic To Cats

house plants toxic to cats

A springtime favorite, tulips are among the most notable poisonous plants to cats. According to Dr. Zacharias, the bulb has the highest concentration of toxins, but the entire plant itself is actually poisonous. Reactions include vomiting, depression, diarrhea and hypersalivation. Consult your vet right away to control clinical signs and prevent dehydration. Decontamination, or getting the plant out of your dog’s system, is typically the first step in treating plant poisoning. If your dog is already showing visible illness signs, additional tests (e.g., blood work), treatments, and overnight hospitalization may be necessary.

Speaking to the central veterinary officer for Cats Protection, Sarah Elliott stresses how extremely poisonous peace lilies are to cats in particular.

Should you be starting your journey figuring out how to be a plant parent for both outdoor and indoor plants, you've probably been completely unaware of the danger that these species pose. So much so you might be looking at your peace lily right now with a look of horror. Although cats are known for being curious, destructive creatures at times, are the chances of them eating plants enough for us to worry about? Sarah says that cats will more likely than not nibble at plants if they're at the right height for them to reach, dangling leaves in particular will encourage feline interest. A 2009 study found that some plants, such as the areca palm, actually release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air (in addition to removing others). And it’s not just the plants themselves — microorganisms in the soil they grow in were also to blame for releasing VOCs.

Cat Palm

These tiny trees grow quickly, and do well in full or partial sunlight with moist soil. The canary date palm favor lots of sunlight and not too much water. Also be sure to use a soil with good drainage, like a peat-based mix. Also known as baby’s tears, or Japanese moss, paddy’s wig (soleirolia soleirolii) is characterized by lots of tiny green leaves and are common additions to terrariums and hanging plant ensembles. This plant does well in indirect sunlight and prefers warmer temperatures.

The ponytail palm (beaucarnea recurvata) looks like a ponytail in the massive draping of leaves it produces. This plant requires minimal care, tolerating dry soil and not needing much fertilization. You might've picked up a pothos plant as it's one of the easiest houseplants to keep alive, however, if you have a feline friend then you might want to place it up high or get rid of it altogether. Thankfully, slight dermatitis (skin irritation) is usually the worst that will happen, but gastrointestinal irritation like vomiting and diarrhea can also occur. If you decide to keep this plant in your home then keep it high up or in a room away from where your cat can’t reach it. Spring bulbs involve lilies, tulips, irises, daffodils, hyacinths, and more. The dainty sweetheart hoya plant (Hoya kerrii “Variegata”) is so named for its variegated cream-and-white leaves that are shaped like little hearts. The heart-leaf hoya is relatively low maintenance, requiring moderate humidity and bright but filtered light. It’s a versatile houseplant that’ll appeal to most green thumbs due to its easy-care nature, charming aesthetic and small footprint. Technically, it’s a grass mixture grown from wheat, barley, oats, and rye, and specifically designed for kitty consumption.

Palms add wonderful lushness and tropical vibes to a room, but not all are pet-friendly. The sago palm contains cycasin, which is extremely toxic to cats, notes the ASPCA. It should be completely avoided, as it can cause dangerous gastrointestinal and liver damage, and in some cases even death. Please do not ask emergency or other specific medical questions about your pets in the blog comments.

Water this plant frequently to prevent it from drying out and avoid direct sunlight. The green ripple peperomia, or peperomia ginny (peperomia caperata) is a popular houseplant, and plays well with pets. These are low-maintenance in terms of watering and are commonly used for hanging plants, to help keep your cat away.

Any plants or flowers marked as caution-advised should be kept out of reach, particularly if your cat is a nibbler. Just as the bright red center starts to wilt, you'll see baby bromeliads (a.k.a. "pups") start popping around the plant's base. For ideal growing conditions, stick it in an open room with indirect sunlight and water it when the soil is dry to the touch. Also called a "baby rubber plant," this office-friendly houseplant has thick green leaves, producing tiny white flowers with little TLC. In fact, you only have to water it weekly (or biweekly, if you must) and give it indirect sunlight.

Any time you’re concerned about possible exposure to something toxic, Dr. Rosen recommends contacting the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline immediately. This temperamental plant requires conditions to be just right for growth. Mosaic plants require a peaty soil mix, high humidity, and diffused sunlight.

If your cat consumes a jade plant, they might vomit or seem uncoordinated, according to the ASPCA. Cassidy is a professional pet sitter and vet tech turned writer whose passion is all things animals, both wild and domestic. She’s had dozens of pets and loves writing about the animal-human bond. She and her husband now live in Wichita with a German shepherd named Raven, two cats, Lucy and Strudel, and a few backyard chickens. Now you know 15 plants to avoid as you fill your home with gorgeous foliage. The thing about this list is that some plants can still be ok to keep in your home if you can find a location your cat will have difficulty reaching!

If you can see the poisonous substance, take your cat away from it and call your vet for advice. While daffodils are a beautiful sign of spring, they are unfortunately dangerous for our feline friends. Daffodil bulbs contain crystals that are extremely toxic to cats if eaten. Care should be taken when purchasing house plants, as varieties such as ficus, cheese plants and aloe vera are not cat friendly. However, there are other plants and flowers, both indoors and outdoors, that can be harmful to cats.

Though this Westside izakaya falls short compared to truly great spots like Little Tokyo’s Kinjiro and nearby Nanbankan, one of our favorite reasons to make a reservation here is the menu’s two hot pot items. Given the restaurant’s small size and local popularity, it’s all but necessary to make a reservation by calling ahead—we’ve been turned away several times while trying to walk in, and the restaurant is often completely full by 7pm. Here are some of our favorite places across the city, from the Westside to the San Gabriel Valley, with plenty of centrally located options, as well. “This piece of legislation is not about adding red tape or about the government picking winners and losers. The WOSB Integrity Act will simply ensure that competition for government contracting opportunities includes women small business owners and is fair. These entrepreneurs drive our economy forward, and when we support them, innovation thrives and the country prospers,” said Rep. Maloy.

Since women- owned small businesses do not have to verify that they are both women-owned and small, large companies are able to self-certify as small businesses to take advantage of the program. Additionally, the federal government has a goal of awarding 5% of federal contracting dollars to women-owned small businesses each year. However, it has only met that goal twice since it was established over 20 years ago.

While the price of entry is high and the drinks are expensive and quite sugary, the dizzying level of spectacle makes Level 8 well worth the time and money for a dressy night of dinner, drinks and live music. For an upscale shabu experience, there's Lucky Mizu, a speakeasy-style joint where a live harpist will work the glittering strings extending across the ceiling as you swish slices of A5 Wagyu through a gleaming golden hot pot. All of this is way less gimmicky than it sounds—and trust us, we’re more surprised than you are. This bipartisan bill is designed to ensure federal contracting dollars intended for women-owned small businesses (WOSBs) are awarded to those firms that meet the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) small business size standards. The WOSB federal contracting program has become susceptible to abuse and fraud due to a self-certification loophole.

I often look back over my life,career- all the tough times, all the great times—I’m reassured that everything is exactly the way it's supposed to be and that's what got me here. They farmed lima beans, okra, and tomatoes. They raised pigs and incorporated oysters, turtles, and shrimp into their cuisine. And they cultivated rice like their lives damn well depended on it. Kind of embarrassed to admit that I've live here since '06 and just found this place. Amazing food, amazing service and amazing vibe during these trying times. We ate in the Gazebo area of the restaurant that is separated from the main building.

Each event is bespoke to your tastes and needs, to provide the best experience possible for you and your guests. If you were lucky, you might have gotten a taste of this U.S. Army veteran’s cooking at the former Bleu Note Lounge, a Lakewood music venue where he was a coowner. That was just a preview of what’s available today at his Hot Fish House.

Laid-back atmosphere with live music that wasn't overwhelmingly loud. The view and atmosphere was amazing as we love Murrels Inlet area. The food was amazing and service was very good. The Cobia was excellent, as well as the scallops. The Seafood Corn Chowder had a lot of big chunks of seafood.

This place was well worth the drive from Myrtle Beach. This is a local favorite with fresh seafood from the coast. I love a good catfish sandwich and theirs was perfect on toasted bun.

Gina believes that children learn best when they are actively engaged. For many years, the late Kathryn Allen provided tremendous support to Unity House, as a volunteer, a member and eventual chair of the board of directors, and for a time as an employee. With her former husband, John Baackes, she also provided significant financial support of the organization, especially for victims of domestic violence. She is survived by a loving fiancée, two daughters, and an extended family that carries on her legacy. Children with identified special needs receive a program and services designed for them. Special Education Teachers and Therapists identify goals and provide individualized instruction in the home and community.

Our daycare centers are licensed by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, and are quality rated by QUALITYstarsNY. Our early intervention program is overseen by the Bureau of Early Intervention at the NYS Department of Health. Our special education program is overseen by the NYS Education Department. Our mission is to empower and enrich the lives of people in recovery, coping with a mental illness, and/or diagnosed with a developmental disability. This is accomplished by offering services and supports in an inclusive, people-centered environment.

The two hundred employees she is fortunate to work with provide direct educational services and the support services that make A Child’s Place a stimulating environment. Staff opportunities for continuing education and trainings, focusing on best practices, provide the foundation for successful programming. My girls have been attending A Child's Place (Unity Sunshine Program) for 2 ½ years. Unity Sunshine is a great program where we feel comfortable knowing the experienced staff have their growth and progress in mind. They worked with people to cut through the red tape of the welfare system, prodded landlords to maintain housing for poor people and sought jobs for people with limited skills. She decided to return to the youngest children, infants through 5 years old. Parent-Teacher conferences are offered twice per year and as needed to all families. Two abandoned apartments and four thousand dollars are scant resources to launch an ambitious venture to help the poor. The boys, who are now over 18 but still cannot be named under the state's youth justice laws, were convicted in relation to his murder earlier this year. "But when we're talking about preventing the root causes and the drivers, we have to address those broader issues that sit outside the youth justice portfolio." "And that was to overcome the politicisation of youth justice, I think that’s been incredibly unhelpful," she offers. According to Commissioner Lewis, the committee presented "an opportunity to overcome a real barrier to effective youth justice reform".

Community Projects are funded on a limited basis with each Member being limited to no more than 15 requests. Projects will be selected by my office based on financial need for the initiative, strength and completion of application, level of improvement the project would contribute to the local community, and community support. While Members of Congress may make up to 15 requests, the Committee is not obligated to accept or fulfill any minimum number of requests per Member. Submitting a request for a Community Project on behalf of your community or organization does not ensure the request will be granted. My office will make every effort to support selected projects and advocate for inclusion in the final appropriations budget.

Halfway houses may be court-mandated for individuals who are coming from a correctional facility. On the other hand, sober living homes provide housing for people who are coming from a substance abuse rehab program. While the two are certainly similar, it is important to note that there are some differences. A sober living home is typically privately owned or they are owned by addiction treatment facilities. "The detention centres are overflowing because the arrest numbers have increased. That overflows into the adult watch houses, which are designed to only hold adults overnight or two nights at most," she said.

When it came down to it Hal B. Hayes was a high functioning nuclear paranoid, one able to spin his fears, quirks and ego as expertise and in the process make a lot of money. The neighbor’s brother told detectives that the victim had called him at some point during the altercation but had already been shot by the time he arrived at the complex, so he started administering CPR, according to the affidavit. The victim’s brother also told detectives that there were multiple cameras around the apartment he and his brother shared, the affidavit said. An Anchorage woman shot and killed a man during a fight among neighbors Saturday night at a Spenard apartment complex, police said. "The best way to maximize seating was to create a symmetrical arrangement with pairs of chairs and sofas," Barrett explains.

Controversial laws were rushed through months later, allowing police watch houses and adult prisons to be used as youth detention centres. "We continually liaise with the Department of Youth Justice in an effort to have those detainees removed from our watch houses into youth detention centres and limit and reduce the number of days they're held in our watch houses." A youth advocacy body is preparing to take legal action against the Queensland government for failing to protect young people in the state's watch houses. Gold Coast chief superintendent Craig Hanlon conceded police watch houses were not the most appropriate place for juvenile offenders to be held, but options were limited in the youth justice system. The state parliament overrode the human rights act in August last year to allow the indefinite detention of young people in adult watch houses. Here at Westwind Recovery®, our southern California sober living facilities can help you lead a healthy lifestyle after treatment.

An intensive outpatient program or an outpatient treatment program can also provide the necessary support. But, the need for encouragement and accountability does not go away after substance abuse treatment is over. Despite reforms introduced five years ago in the wake of explosive allegations of maltreatment of children in Queensland watch houses, Commissioner McDougall says the situation hasn't improved. But chief superintendent Hanlon said the number of children being detained in watch houses had increased since the Queensland government's legislation changed. "It was very clear to me … that by summer, we would have watch houses full of children for weeks on end," he told the ABC. The loans came due, and Hayes was delinquent and had not delivered the housing units he had promised. Instead of building homes for military bases, he had built a home for himself and lived a lavish Hollywood playboy lifestyle. Trudy Reading from Voice for Victims says the committee had shown a "reluctance" to listen to victims of youth crime. It's amid rising crime figures, a worrying politicisation of youth crime, and fears that the voices of victims have been sidelined in the debate.

The Youth Advocacy Centre has written a scathing letter to the state, after a "summer of human rights abuses," as described by the state’s Human Rights Commissioner. "Young girls are being held in the sight of adult inmates and they can call out to them." Haye’s house has so far developed two responses to different types of annihilation, each reflecting the state of the times … at least for those with the money to do so. When Boozer rented out the now 10-bedroom, 11-bath house to music legend Prince, it underwent a sudden and specific transformation that created a high profile tug-of-war.

So while he continued to work on contracts for basic military housing, his nuclear preparedness innovations went into his own home. Stormy Daniels' ex-husband Mike Moz told us he's collaborating on the project with Ye ... We broke the story, Ye's looking to start Yeezy Porn, a new adult entertainment studio -- and, we're told it could open as soon as summer. The joke — a reference to a man who set himself on fire outside the courthouse where Trump's criminal trial was taking place and later died of his injuries — earned a mixed reaction of laughs, groans, and gasps from audience.

"When we focus on sensationalising youth crime, a lot of the discourse becomes dominated by tough on crime rhetoric. "Politicisation is the greatest impediment to youth justice policy," Commissioner Natalie Lewis from Queensland's Family and Child Commission (QFCC) says. "There are a range of supports available — from regional Youth Justice staff and funded supports including legal advocacy, bail supports and cultural services," she said. Ms Hayes said the case would be based on specific cases of children who have suffered maltreatment. Last week, 56 First Nations children were being held in remand centres, representing 70 per cent of the total figure. The protection provided by the house today is in its speculative dollar value as opposed to the physical sheltering of the owner’s body, as the owner is likely never there.
